JJJ ratings drop; film at 11

from the groundhog-day dept.
Media National yoof broadcaster JJJ's ratings have slid in the latest Australian radio ratings, released yesterday. In Melbourne, JJJ's audience share dropped from 3.3 per cent to 2.8 per cent; in Sydney, where the station has always been more popular, it dropped from 5.1 per cent to 4.4 per cent.

The news was better in Australia's smaller cities: in Brisbane, JJJ went up to 7.3 (from 7.1) and in Adelaide it rose to 5.5 (from 4.7). But in Perth, it dropped to 5.1 (from 6.5).

Does this mean Richard Kingsmill isn't the saviour of JJJ after all? Will the "JJJ does well reaching kids in the bush" excuse get another run?

i would see these figures as a correction. last period, melb figures rose by highest percentage in (my) memory. can't recall sydney. so it ain't grand news, but nor is it too bad - wonder why the variance?

ABC Classic FM never manages to pull more than 2%-4% anywhere, and no one ever questions its ratings.

The argument that JJJ is good for regional areas is perfectly valid. Most regional areas don't have the same sort of community radio that is available in metropolitan areas. Without JJJ, radio in the country would be a total wasteland.

Are you proposing that JJJ should be shut down? Or that it should start playing the same pop-pap as Austereo, in order to pull in more listeners?

Dump the hip-hop rap crap.

Regrettably, it's all been canvassed before. JJJ is not succeeding in the ratings because it is neither a commercial station, pandering to the misguided musical non-tastes of the great unwashed, nor a purely community-oriented broadcaster, aimed at the numerous self-important subgroups whose so fervently push their own agendas.

There is definitely a place for JJJ, but in my opinion it needs to focus more on new, Australian, not-so-mainstream music, have more music-oriented content (as opposed to the moronic "comedy" of Adam & Will or those fools on Today Today - I think Mel's morning show is a good move) and a renewed focus serving a broad audience that responds to intelligence and quality, rather than lowest-common-denominator gimmicks.

And, yeah, get rid of the hip-hop rap crap...
What are FBi's figures? (Score:1)

Anyone willing to bet that the drop in JJJ's Sydney figures is all from people switching over to FBi? FBi's ratings aren't in the linked poll...

Artists are responsible, because for some reason we think we should be millionaires for making people smile. But I don't worry too much, because it will be over soon. There won't be a market for making people smile because kids will just do it for free. — Dangermouse
